Bishop appointed interim Head of High Performance

Lacrosse Australia has today announced the appointment of Ben Bishop as Head of High Performance, joining the organisation on a six-month maternity leave contract in place of Samantha Macpherson.

Bishop will take a short break from his current role as High Performance Coach Development Senior Lead at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) to take on the position with Lacrosse Australia.

A former Kookaburra, Bishop represented Australia at the highest level in hockey before transitioning into a distinguished coaching and performance career. His experience includes serving as Assistant Coach, Lead Performance Analyst, and Head Coach of the Hockey Australia Junior Men’s Program with Hockey Australia, as well as leading roles at the ACT Academy of Sport as Coach, Wellbeing and Engagement Lead, and Coach Development Lead.

Lacrosse Australia Chair, Abbie Burgess-Brice, said Bishop’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment for the sport.

“We’re delighted to have Ben stepping into the Director of High Performance role over the coming months,” Burgess-Brice said. “His deep experience across high performance environments will be a valuable addition as we continue to strengthen our national programs and support athletes on the road to LA28.”

Bishop will oversee Lacrosse Australia’s national high performance programs as the sport continues to build momentum toward potential inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (LA28).

Recent results from Australia’s high performance pathway highlight the sport’s growing international success, including:

  • Bronze for the Women’s Sixes program at The World Games in Chengdu, China;

  • Bronze for the Men’s U20 Field program at the World Lacrosse Men’s U20 Championship in Jeju, South Korea;

  • Gold for both the Boys’ and Girls’ U16 Sixes programs at the inaugural U16 Championship in Jeju, South Korea; and

  • Silver (Women) and fourth place (Men) finishes at the World Lacrosse Super Sixes event in Oshawa, Canada.

Bishop said he was eager to contribute to Lacrosse Australia’s ongoing progress and to build strong relationships across the lacrosse community.

“I am delighted to step into the Lacrosse world to start building relationships and continuing the great work that is already happening within the organisation,” Bishop said. “The sport is on an exciting journey to LA28, and I look forward to being part of that energy — seeing our athletes and staff succeed on the world stage.”

Bishop’s first assignment in the role will be supporting the Men’s and Women’s Field Training Camps, to be held in Adelaide following the Major League Sixes event in mid-November.
