Australian Lacrosse Hall of Fame

The Australian Lacrosse Hall of Fame (ALHOF) has been established to recognise exceptional performances of athletes at World Championships, World Cups, and National carnivals, as well as those individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the growth and development of lacrosse in Australia.

Nominations for the inaugural ALHOF induction class will open on Sunday 29 June, with a closing date of Sunday 10 August 2025.

Proposed inductees will be presented to the Lacrosse Australia Board in September, with inaugural class of Australian Lacrosse Hall of Fame inductions to take place on the weekend of 13-15 November, coinciding with the LA Major League Sixes event.

In its inaugural year, the ALHOF will induct up to 10 male and 10 females from the modern era (1962 onwards), ensuring that Australia’s lacrosse champions are acknowledged for their exceptional achievements on and off the field.

    • Trish Adams

    • Rod Ansell

    • Dennis Banyard

    • Geri Bowden

    • Peter Cann

    • Ray Duthy

    • Graham Hobbs, Chair

    • John Nolan

    • Lynne Pike

  • The Selection Committee Policy is made by the Australian Lacrosse Hall of Fame (ALHOF) in conjunction with the Board of Lacrosse Australia (LA) in pursuit of the objects of the ALHOF and in the best interests of LA and its Members.

    1. Any person, lacrosse club or state body may nominate.

    2. The nomination forms are available on this website and may be completed online, with any further information attached.

    3. Prior to completing a nomination form the nominator should read and fully understand the criteria, which is also available on the LA website. It is critical that the nominator is aware that an inductee to the ALHOF is the highest award afforded to any lacrosse person in Australia, for achievement at the highest level of lacrosse while representing Australian lacrosse, and is recognized as an elite, the very “best of breed” in Australian lacrosse.

    4. It is a strict condition of nomination that the nominee is not aware of the nomination nor does the nominee become aware of the nomination, and the nomination remains confidential to relevant persons pertinent to the nomination. This is essential to avoid any embarrassment or disappointment should a nomination not be successful.

    5. It is important that each nomination is thoroughly researched and factually accurate, and presented to provide the nominee with the best possible opportunity to be inducted. Should a nomination not be successful the nominator will be advised in confidence, without any reason provided, and no further nominations for that person will be considered unless new and significant information is provided.

    6. The categories for nomination for the modern era (Post 1962) are player (P), hybrid (H) and builder (B).
A hybrid may be a combination of player, coach and official. A builder nomination is specifically related to growing and developing the game, not for outstanding administration, which should be addressed by life membership at various levels.
There is also a category for the Hickory Era (Pre 1962). When considering candidates for the Hickory Era (Pre 1962) nominators need to be aware that these men may not have had the opportunities of the modern era, as there was significant disruption to the game due to WW1 (1914-1918), the Great Depression (1929 – mid 1930s) and WW2 (1939-1945). It should also be noted that candidates in this era never had the opportunity to play overseas, only 2 international tours to Australia (1907 and 1959), and national championships played only every third year in most cases.

    7. The Selection Committee will be the sole arbiter with respect to selection or otherwise of any nominee, subject always to the final approval of the LA Board. Members selected and approved ultimately by LA will be notified directly by the ALHOF and invited to accept membership. Nominators of successful nominees will also be notified.

    8. All nominations received by the Secretary to the ALHOF prior to 31 December in any year will be considered by the Selection Committee prior to 30 June of the following year.

    9. An inductee may be inducted posthumously.

    10. Apart from the initial five years, only two nominations for men’s lacrosse and two nominations for women’s lacrosse, may be approved in any one year. It should be emphasized that there is no requirement for inductions to be made each year and only those meeting the strict criteria will be approved. Should successful nominations in any year exceed the mandated number, all meritorious nominations will carry over to the following year for consideration.

    Inductions

Recipients are invited to an inductions, where they are presented with their ALHOF award by a representative of Lacrosse Australia.

Inductions take place once per year, usually in November.

  • Eras

    Hickory Era is Pre 1962

    Modern Era is Post 1962

    Categories

Participant inductees must be deemed elite and “best of breed” at national and international levels (where that comparison is or was possible) and it follows that it will not be a large group, for men or women, and that there will not be a requirement to induct on an annual basis, but a necessity for each nominee to reach a benchmark or threshold.

Inductees should be acknowledged as being the pinnacle of our game, setting a very high bar for induction.

Criteria must also not weight the number of times an individual has participated in a world championship or world cup, more importantly it should focus on performance at such events, including MVPs and All-Star teams, where selected.

There will be outstanding players who have had their careers cut short for whatever reason, or who may not have been available or able to play in world championships or world cups, this also needs to be considered, did they have opportunity?

Builder members are a high-level of achievement from personal effort or initiative, in a field of endeavour that contributes to the growth or development of Australian lacrosse at club, state, national and/or international levels, or to the development and status of Australian lacrosse.

This category is specifically for growth & development, is not for administrative or financial acumen.

Mere length of service or involvement with lacrosse or lacrosse bodies by a candidate without having satisfied the primary requirement and/or demonstrated outstanding achievement arising from personal initiative or innovation is not sufficient justification for induction.

Legend status provides the opportunity to elevate, celebrate and honour a distinguished member whose sporting performances are considered part of Australian folklore and the recognition and elevation provides the opportunity to re-tell the remarkable story and inspire a whole new generation of Australians.

Participant members may be elevated to Legend status who have:

    • Made a unique contribution to Australian lacrosse, leaving an indelible mark on the lacrosse community and its history

    • Been dominant in their discipline for the majority of their career (The greatest of their era)

    • Been significant contributors to lacrosse by their inspirational achievements

    • Distinguished themselves at the very highest levels of lacrosse, and in doing so have offered inspiration and example to younger Australian lacrosse players

    • The differentiation between Member and Legend is that the names of the Legends should be the first to come to mind whenever the pinnacles of Australian lacrosse performances are discussed eg Don Bradman, Dawn Fraser, Walter Lindrum, among others.
