Australian Sixes teams shine on world stage in Canada
Australia’s Women’s Sixes Lacrosse team has claimed silver at the World Lacrosse Super Sixes event in Oshawa, Canada over the weekend – capping off a breakout year for Australian lacrosse on the world stage.
The team impressed throughout the tournament, defeating top international sides before falling narrowly in a fiercely contested gold medal match. The result marks Australia’s best-ever finish at a Super Sixes event and follows its bronze medal performance at The World Games in Chengdu, China just two months ago.
Head coach Katrina Dowd said the result reflected both the talent within the program and the sport’s growing momentum at home.
“This silver medal is a testament to the commitment and belief our players and staff have shown throughout the year,” said Dowd.
“There’s a real sense of connection in this group – and that energy is being mirrored across the lacrosse community in Australia. We’re not just competing with the world’s best; we’re pushing them.”
Meanwhile, Australia’s Men’s Sixes team also impressed in Oshawa, finishing fourth after a thrilling one-goal loss to the Haudenosaunee in the bronze medal match.
Head coach Adam Sear said the team’s performance was another important step forward for the developing program.
“Our group showed incredible resilience and character across the week,” said Sear.
“To be right there with the best nations in the world shows how far we’ve come in a short space of time. We’re building depth, belief and a uniquely Australian style of play – and this result gives us real confidence heading into what’s next.”
The dual performances build further anticipation for the sport’s continued rise ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, where lacrosse will make its return to the Olympic program for the first time in more than a century.
